On a noisy night in mid-February 2012, in the heart of the English capital, London, Egyptian scientist Laila Abdel Moneim adjusted her hijab as she prepared to ascend the honorary podium in front of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace, to receive the first-class award of merit at the “Global” international conference after discovering a method that allows facilities to be protected from the effects of earthquakes. Laila was thinking about the most difficult situation after receiving the award, when she would take the corner of the conference to give her speech in which she would explain how she arrived at her majestic invention, which caught the attention of international research centers and was approved by most of them after several experiments. The thinking did not last long, as Laila quickly said in her speech that she discovered this method after reading a verse in the Holy Quran. “Bring me the iron rod until, when he had leveled the two shells, he said, ‘Blow,’ until when he had made it fire, he said, ‘Bring me, let me pour drops upon it.’ They were not able to reveal it, nor were they able to pry it.” The Egyptian scientist Laila Abdel Moneim, who holds a doctorate in engineering, indicates that what was stated in Surat Al-Kahf stopped her to carefully consider the situation of its revelation, and inspired her to conduct a number of experiments. Laila came up with a new composition of “reinforced concrete”, in which she used the same materials that Dhu al-Qarnain used to erect the barrier between the two mountains, which are materials extracted from petroleum products and added molten iron with asphalt, resulting in a solid material that helps resist earthquakes from the bitumen walls.
Mother of inventors:
She is Laila Abdel Moneim, an Egyptian scientist residing in London. She was born in Sayyeda Zeinab in 1949 to five brothers. She studied engineering and completed a diploma in mechanical and hydraulic engineering. She was appointed head of the design and implementation department at the Cairo Water Utility. She presented a different idea, which is the automatic washing machine that contains two tubs. It has a hydraulic water cycle and is suitable for hotels. It also saves 50% of electricity and powder. The idea was presented to the Research Academy. Scientific and patented. After receiving the Global Award, which is only given to scientists in the field of inventions, the jury found that her record of inventions that had been registered in the field of scientific research was large, and some of the inventions were outstanding, so they called her the Mother of Inventors and said that this number of inventions had not been presented before, whether inside or outside Egypt.
Great inventions
One of Laila Abdel Moneim’s most important inventions is molten iron that resists earthquakes and missiles. She received the British Medal of Merit after this invention. She also invented pipes that resist corrosion, the invention of a spiral toothbrush, and also the invention of a device that enables air to pass inside water meters, the millennium rosary that comes in the shape of a meter, and the filter that saves 50% of water. She also invented a device that mathematically measures the rate of heart stress. In the field of medicine, it invented a snoring mask, a device for extracting teeth, a machine for cutting gypsum, and also an oven that works to get rid of anthrax. China has implemented the idea of this oven with the same specifications that were submitted to the Academy of Scientific Research. She also has other inventions in the field of mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, irrigation engineering, agricultural engineering, and also in the field of energy, communications engineering, and nuclear engineering, such as the water filter, the multi-purpose stove, the telephone for studying, the invention of a tent powered by solar energy, and she invented a robot that searches for explosives. She also invented a machine that removes excess skin. One of her most important and prominent inventions is an artificial lake, which is operated to be a space missile base.
Honor her
After inventor Laila Abdel Moneim achieved more than a hundred inventions, she was awarded the Order of Merit by the Global International Conference held in London, making her the first Arab woman to receive this high award, and her ranking was third among a thousand participants in the conference. What is striking, despite all these inventions, is that she did not obtain a single patent from her country, Egypt. One of the members of the jury that awarded her the Merit Award described her as “the mother of inventors who works in the silence of the Sphinx and the heights of the pyramids.”
